On The Board
Joe Mauer (MIN)
The Minnesota Twins' manager trying to find ways to win (the club has the worst record in its history starting off a season), put Mauer who leads the league in on-base percentage, in the lead-off spot. It was the first time in his career that he was first in the batting order and was unable to contribute going 0-3 with a walk; with the defeat, the team left its record at 8-24.
Mauer in 13 seasons has played 920 games as a catcher and is one of only three backstops that debuted in the Expansion Era (since 1961), to bat first in the lineup after 800+ games behind the plate. He is also the third defensive player at any position (last 20 seasons), that starts in the leadoff spot after 1,400+ games in the Majors.
