On The Board

Miami Marlins

They used five pitchers in the eighth inning to preserve a shutout victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. After the starter and winning pitcher Justin Nicolino retired the first batter of the frame, the following three relievers (Bryan Morris, Cody Ege, and David Phelps) gave a free pass to each of the three batters they faced, to eventually lead Jose Urena to get the last 6 outs of the game and credit himself with a save. Miami is the first club in MLB history to use 3 different pitchers who did not make a single out during a shutout win.

Extra: The San Francisco Giants triumphed by scoring the most runs (13) this season and relied on Matt Duffy, Brandon Belt, and Hunter Pence, who had three hits each, including a triple. It is the first time since 1929 that the Giants have 3 players with those numbers in a game. Duffy (3-4) had 2 hits, a triple, a walk, and scored three runs; Belt (3-4) missed the cycle by just a home run and drove in 5 runs; and Pence (3-3) reached base in his 5 plate appearances with 2 singles, a triple, and 2 free passes, and drove in and scored 2 runs.
