On The Board
M. Cabrera (DET) & D. Gordon (MIA)
The matchup between the Detroit Tigers and the Miami Marlins is the first Opening Day game in which the two batting champions from their respective leagues in the previous season faced each other. They are Miguel Cabrera (AL .338) and Dee Gordon (NL .333). Both players got their first hits of the campaign during the game and Gordon became the first defending batting champion to start off the next season with a three extra base hits.
Extra: Carlos Correa (Houston Astros) became the youngest player in franchise history (second youngest shortstop in MLB) to launch a home run on Opening Day. He connected for his 23rd long ball in his 100th career game, more than any other shortstop in that amount of contests in the Majors.
