On The Board
Span, Panik, and Posey (SFG)
The San Francisco Giants had three hitters (Denard Span, Joe Panik, and Buster Posey) launch consecutive home runs against Milwaukee pitcher Ariel Peña. This is the third time the back-to-back-to-back HR feat has been achieved on Opening Day. Span became the player with the most RBI in his first game in a Giants uniform (5). Peña is the first reliever to ever give up 3 straight homers in the first game of the season.
Extra: For the first time in Major League Baseball the new rules over sliding at second were applied (6.01 j). In the seventh inning of a game against the Washington Nationals, the hitter for the Atlanta Braves, Hector Olivera, was declared out at first base despite reaching safely. This was due to the illegal slide of his teammate Nick Markakis at second base while he was trying to avoid a double play.
