Bennett played 15 seasons primarily as a catcher. In 1894, he lost both of his legs in a train accident and passed away in 1927. |

In 1896, the new stadium in Detroit was named as Bennett Park in his honor. |

From that year on, he was invited to throw the first pitch of each Inaugural Game. |

He caught the first Perfect Game in history, thrown by Lee Richmond in 1880. |
